Training on Establishment of Bamboo Plantation to support Rural Development and Forest Conservation





 "Training on Establishment of Bamboo Plantation to Support Rural Development and Forest Conservation" has been conducted with the cooperation of International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and Forest Department (FD), Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry, Myanmar under the financial support of the Project entitled "Capacity Building for Developing REDD+ activities in the context of Sustainable Forest Management" which is being currently implemented by Forest Department, Myanmar in cooperation with ITTO.
The training was organized by the project for three days from 15 June to 17 June, 2014, at Training Centre, 6th mile Forest Nursery, Yedashe Township, with the cooperation of Forest Research Institute, Yezin and Taungoo Forest District, Bago Region.
 The training was conducted to fulfill the following objectives;

  1. To understand the techniques on bamboo propagation, bamboo silviculture and bamboo forest management by the rural people who are dealing with bamboos for their livings;
  2.  To clarify the economic benefits of bamboo forest plantation; and
  3. To clearly understand about the different extractive methods of bamboo, production of different bamboo-based products and its market development. 



In the opening session of the training, Opening Remarks was delivered by U Nyunt Aung Deputy Director, Bago Region Forest Department and closing speech was given by Project Manager Dr, Thaung Naung Oo of  REDD+ Project. 




It was attended by (25) villagers, from Yedashe, Taunggo, Oaktwin and Phyu Townships, of Taunggo District which is the ITTO REDD Project site area. 
During the training, 5 invited resource persons gave the following lectures and conducted practical works :

  1. "Concept of REDD+ and Climate Change" and "Economic Benefits of Production of Bamboo products and handicrafts for rural development" by Dr. Thaung Naing Oo, Deputy Director of Forest Department and REDD+ Projects Manager
  2. "Bamboo Silviculture" and "Different Bamboo Propagation techniques" by U Aung Zaw Moe, Assistant Research Officer of Forest Research Institute, Myanmar
  3. "Different Extractive Methods of Bamboo" and "Utilization of Bamboo" by Daw Mu Mu Aung, Assistant Research Officer of Forest Research Institute, Myanmar
  4. "Bamboo Forest Management" by Daw Phyu Phyu Lwin, Staff Officer, Forest Department, Myanmar;
  5. Economic importance of bamboo and its market potential by U Zaw Zaw, Range Officer, Forest Department, Myanmar; and
  6. "Practical Work on different bamboo propagation techniques" by U Than Htun, Expert on bamboo propagation and Nursery techniques.
